US House Speaker Mike Johnson has formally praised Israel's decision to designate Highway 60 as the Biblical Highway. In a letter sent by his office, Johnson described the historic road as a powerful symbol of the Jewish people's ancient connection to the Land of Israel. He emphasized that this sacred link to biblical heroes serves as a testament to the Jewish people's ancient heritage in the land of the Bible, referencing the stories that helped shape the Judeo-Christian tradition and shared values of faith, freedom, and hope.

Drawing a parallel to American history, Johnson noted that just as Route 66 in the United States tells the story of America's rugged and pioneering spirit, the new Biblical Highway will remind people of faith around the world of the miraculous journey of the children of Israel. The letter arrives several months after the Israeli government approved the initiative to give Highway 60 the official name Derech HaTanach, which translates to the Biblical Highway.

The decision was part of a broader government effort to develop the road as an international destination for tourism, heritage, and education. The initiative was advanced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Transportation Minister Miri Regev. A ceremony marking the official designation took place in June. Attendees included Netanyahu, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, Regev, Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, and other officials.

Highway 60 functions as one of Israel's major north-south transportation arteries. It runs along the West Bank and connects a series of locations that are central to biblical history and Jewish heritage. The route passes through or near significant sites such as Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethlehem, Beit El, and Shiloh. These locations are associated with the biblical accounts of the patriarchs, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and the broader history of the Jewish people.

The government's primary goal is to transform the highway from a simple transportation corridor into a comprehensive heritage highway. This transformation emphasizes archaeological preservation, tourism infrastructure, historical interpretation, and international promotion. Under the approved plan, various ministries have been instructed to advance the development and preservation of biblical, historical, and archaeological sites located along the route. Transportation authorities have also been tasked with updating road signage, with specific government funding allocated for these changes.

The project is specifically designed to attract international visitors, with a particular focus on Christian tourists and students of the Bible. By highlighting the historical and geographical connections between biblical narratives and their physical locations, the initiative aims to deepen visitors' understanding of the region. Johnson's endorsement adds a significant voice from US political leadership to the effort. As Speaker of the House, he is one of the most senior figures in the American political system and has consistently expressed support for Israel's historical and religious ties to the region.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has also recently addressed the initiative, recalling the dedication ceremony. He described the concept as one of the most brilliant ideas, stating that he recognizes the genius in the project even if he did not originate it. Huckabee noted that the Biblical Highway connects the Jewish people to the central route along which most biblical events took place, effectively bringing the ancient narrative together with the living reality of Highway 60 today.

Local officials have also weighed in on the project's potential. Yishai Fleisher, a Municipal Councilmember for Efrat, said that the road connects the Jewish people to the central route of biblical events. He expressed hope that the road will become a major tourism destination for Bible lovers from around the world.

Fleisher added that, God willing, the route will feature scenic overlooks and information stations in the future. Activities are planned to transform a drive along Highway 60 into a fascinating experience. This will help connect visitors to the Land of Israel and its rich historical and biblical heritage.
