North Korean leader Kim Jong-un traveled to China on Saturday and inaugurated the New Yalu River Bridge, a 3km structure that links the two nations. According to South Korea's unification ministry and China's Xinhua news agency, Kim arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong after crossing the waterway. The trip marks his sixth journey to China and his first since September 2025.
During his stay, Kim met with Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of China's Communist party. The two officials toured a car factory and agreed to strengthen bilateral relations. Xinhua reported that Kim stated North Korea stands ready to work with China to carry forward their historical friendship and expand practical cooperation to deliver tangible benefits to their populations.
The opening of the bridge comes with specific economic and strategic implications. Construction was completed by China 12 years ago, but delays on the North Korean side postponed the opening until mid-October 2026. This delay has ended, allowing Pyongyang to utilize the new infrastructure for trade and diplomatic transit.
The timing of the visit appears designed to reinforce ties ahead of the October 25 anniversary of China's first major victory in the Korean War. That military win occurred days after Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River into North Korea in October 1950. Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that traffic controls were implemented around the bridge and a nearby war museum, while hotel bookings in the area were restricted in anticipation of the senior official's arrival.
The new crossing completes a road network connecting North Korea to its two main backers. In early September, North Korea and Russia opened the first road bridge across their own short border. With the Yalu bridge now operational, Pyongyang has direct road links to both Beijing and Moscow. This infrastructure development occurs as relations with South Korea deteriorate, with Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong issuing approximately 10 critical statements toward Seoul since late September.
South Korea's unification ministry described the frequency of these statements as unusual. Kim Yo Jong also announced plans to resume loudspeaker broadcasts at the border within days. The visit sets the stage for upcoming diplomatic events, including the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19, where Chinese president Xi Jinping will host the meeting.
Speculation has circulated regarding a potential meeting between Kim and US president Donald Trump during this period. However, Reuters reported on Friday that US and South Korean officials assess the likelihood of such a summit this year as low. Wang Huning accompanied Kim to the bridge to see him off, according to Xinhua.
