A Ukrainian court has ordered the Russian state to pay $1.6 million for a lost seed inventory.
The Commercial Court of Luhansk Oblast ruled that Russia must pay UAH 65.36 million to Oliiar, a private company based in Pustomyty, Lviv Oblast.
The company lost 2,107 tonnes of sunflower seeds from the 2021 harvest. These seeds were stored in a warehouse in Svatove when Russian armed groups seized the facility after the full-scale invasion began.
Oliiar had purchased 4,700 tonnes of seeds from Prydniprovske Agrarian Company LLC in October 2021. The supplier delivered the full amount to a Svatove-Ahro facility. By February 24, 2022, the storage firm had transferred 2,592 tonnes to Oliiar. The remaining stock was never recovered.
The court found that Oliiar provided conclusive evidence linking the loss directly to Russia's armed aggression. The compensation amount was determined through an expert valuation. The ruling names the Russian Ministry of Justice as the representative of the state.
Iryna Zalizna is the founder of Oliiar, and Iryna Podoba serves as its director.
This decision follows a prior ruling by the same court. That order required Russia to pay UAH 51.67 million to Trading House Agrokhim LLC for property lost in Svatove and Kakhovka.
