Residents of a Honolulu condominium complex intervened Monday afternoon to stop a man from carrying a 24-year-old woman away, according to police. Authorities later charged 23-year-old Diesel Makanikaiaulu Kawelo with kidnapping, with bail set at $500,000.
Surveillance footage showed a truck parked outside the Kainalu condominiums, where a man entered the garage and confronted two women. Police said the suspect elbowed a 77-year-old resident in the face during the encounter. The older woman said the man shoved her aside before lifting her friend off the ground.
"He shoved me away from my friend and he picked her up," she said. "He looked like a monster. He just had so much hatred and craziness in his eyes."
Beverly Louis, a neighbor, said she watched the man bear-hug the younger woman and drag her toward the rear of his vehicle. "I just started screaming, 'Drop her! Drop her! Drop her!'", Louis said. "She was screaming for her life. She was terrified."
Another resident, Mike Finkelstein, said he shouted that he had called police and was coming down to intervene. Several neighbors then moved in, allowing the 24-year-old to break free. Witnesses said the suspect drove off in his truck. Police took him into custody a few hours later after spotting him running naked in a nearby neighborhood.
The 77-year-old resident said she and her friend were still having nightmares and that the neighborhood remained on edge.
