A family in Georgia paid a veterinary hospital to euthanize their dog, Cha Cha, then learned months later that the animal may have been alive after that appointment. The case has been taken to the state's veterinary board, where the family filed a complaint seeking answers about what happened to their pet.

The family says a former employee came forward with information that a veterinary worker took Cha Cha home instead of performing the euthanasia as requested. That account alleges the dog was euthanized later, though it was described as healthy at the time. The source material has also carried reports that the dog had diabetes and organ failure.

The family wants to know whether the hospital followed the instructions it was given. The family also alleges the hospital has faced similar accusations in the past. No date has been set for the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine to act on the complaint.

Deciding to euthanize a pet is among the most difficult calls an owner makes, and it depends on trust in veterinary professionals. That trust is what makes allegations like these difficult for families, who rely on clinics to treat animals with care and honesty.

The complaint could bring attention to the circumstances surrounding Cha Cha's final days and allow authorities to review what happened. The family is asking why the dog was allegedly taken home, and what led to the reported euthanasia at a later date.
