The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed on Monday that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir held back a military action against Iran due to political concerns. The statement acknowledged the friction between the top military commander and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the timing of the move. The IDF clarified that while the army is focused on security, the specific directive was paused to avoid political interference.

This development follows reports from Channel 12 on Sunday. The outlet stated that Zamir received a directive from the political leadership to carry out an action. Security officials told the channel that the move would likely trigger a rapid escalation into a confrontation with Iran. Because the action was sensitive, Zamir requested an in-depth discussion and formal authorization before proceeding.

Sources familiar with the details said the IDF leadership feared the political echelon was trying to exploit the front with Iran for gain ahead of elections. The military statement on Monday did not deny that Zamir blocked the prime minister from taking further action. It cited concerns that politics might influence the decision-making process during this sensitive period.

Netanyahu denied the existence of a clash late on Sunday night. Speaking on Channel 14's The Patriots, he said there is no confrontation. He argued that some are trying to obscure the fact that Zamir himself said Iran was attempting to interfere in the elections. The IDF statement on Monday emphasized that the chief of staff and the army are above any specific party.

The military said its operational activities are based solely on security, professional, and nonpartisan considerations. The statement noted that the army is on high alert on every front according to the warnings and sensitivity of the election period. It described any other discussion as misleading and irrelevant.

The IDF is currently on high alert as Israel prepares for upcoming elections. The military's clarification aims to settle the debate over whether political timing influenced the decision to pause the potential strike against Iran. The statement serves as the official record of the internal discussion between the political and military leaders.
