Melania Trump Secures Rare Ceasefire for Trapped Town in Occupied Ukraine
A temporary pause in fighting in Oleshky aims to evacuate elderly residents after months of supply shortages.

A humanitarian ceasefire has taken effect in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine’s Kherson region, following a direct intervention by First Lady Melania Trump. The agreement, which began at 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday, is designed to halt military action to allow aid into the area and facilitate the evacuation of civilians. Both the Ukrainian and Russian militaries confirmed the start of the truce, though neither side has specified an end date for the temporary pause.
The White House announced the deal last week, describing Oleshky as being on the brink of disaster. In a statement, Trump said the remaining population, composed primarily of elderly residents, urgently needed medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. She noted that residents had limited electricity, faced mined roads, and endured regular attacks. She claimed that without her intervention, bringing aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that the ceasefire is likely to last several days. He explained that Russian forces must clear the roads of mines before his troops can verify the area is safe. Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about Moscow's intentions, saying he had no doubt Russia would work to clear mines so that residents would head toward Russia and stay there.
The town, which had a pre-war population of roughly 24,000, is now home to an estimated 2,000 people, including children. Ukrainian media reports from residents who escaped describe severe food shortages, with some relying on homegrown produce and others eating grass. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that no food deliveries have reached the town since the end of May. Communication remains difficult due to compromised internet and cellphone service.
Both sides blame one another for the crisis. Kyiv accuses Russian forces of using remaining residents as human shields and mining roads to prevent Ukrainian offensive operations. Russia has countered that Ukraine is laying siege to the town with drone strikes and blocking humanitarian aid. The Kremlin acknowledged last month that its military was working to resolve problems with food and medical supplies entering Oleshky.
The agreement includes a provision for an impartial American media organization to document the process, ensuring that the wishes of each family are respected. Civilian representatives from both sides will visit the town to determine the level of assistance required. This arrangement marks a distinct shift from previous unilateral ceasefires announced by either side for religious holidays, as it involves open mediation by the United States.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that the ceasefire could serve as a model for similar humanitarian arrangements elsewhere, citing the highly positive American involvement. The White House stated that Melania Trump used the communication channel established through her previous campaign to bring back Ukrainian children taken by Russia to secure this truce.
