US law enforcement agencies have recaptured Jacob Allen Morley, a 28-year-old convicted murderer who escaped from a Tennessee prison more than a week ago. Morley was serving a life sentence for the 2022 killing of his colleague when he breached the perimeter of the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, located approximately 90 miles north of Memphis.
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, security footage captured Morley in his prison uniform cutting through the facility fence around 11:30pm on 25 October. He subsequently stole a vehicle from a nearby farm to flee the area. On Wednesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that he was back in custody following a coordinated operation involving local, state, and federal partners.
The investigation intensified after authorities received a tip indicating that Morley was hiding at a property in Illinois. A truck that had been stolen from the same location became a key element in the manhunt. Investigators tracked the vehicle using automatic license plate reader technology as it moved through Missouri, prompting local authorities to pursue the lead.
Morley was finally apprehended by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Carroll County at 11:34am local time on Tuesday. The arrest was described as incident-free. During the search of the vehicle, officers recovered three firearms that had previously been reported stolen, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Photographs released by officials showed Morley handcuffed and being led out of a field by police officers.
The manhunt involved a significant interagency effort. The Missouri State Highway Patrol noted that officers from the Kansas City Police Department, Independence Police Department, the FBI, US Marshals Service, and Homeland Security Investigations all participated in the operation. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation stated that members of the public provided information during the investigation, though it was not immediately clear if the reward had been paid.
Following the escape, Morley was placed on the most wanted list by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Tennessee Department of Correction initially offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to his arrest. This amount was increased by $15,000 on Wednesday as the search continued.
Morley was originally convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his colleague, Cody Birchfield, in 2022. He was sentenced in June 2025, and his request for a new trial was denied in May of the same year. Court records from Carter County indicate that Birchfield's body was discovered inside a metal box located under Morley's home.
A pathology report cited in court documents stated that Birchfield died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Bullet casings recovered from the scene matched a gun found in Morley's residence. Birchfield's sister shared in a victim impact statement that the two men had developed a friendship while Birchfield was training Morley at their employer, a pallet manufacturing company.
In addition to the murder charge, Morley was convicted of vandalism, tampering with evidence, aggravated burglary, and evading arrest. This is not the first time he has led police on a prolonged chase, as his 2022 arrest followed a pursuit that crossed state lines into North Carolina.
The Northwest Correctional Complex is a men's facility with a capacity of 1,776 inmates, housing individuals from low to maximum security levels. The prison has experienced numerous incidents of violence in recent years. In July, a grand jury returned dozens of indictments related to assaults on staff and the murders of five inmates.
