Helen Haines, the 65-year-old independent member of parliament for Wangaratta, has moved from critical to serious but stable condition. The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne issued the update on Saturday morning. This marks the first improvement in her status since she was airlifted to the facility following the incident on Monday.

Authorities state that Haines was deliberately struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in north-east Victoria. As a direct result of the collision, medical staff amputated both of her legs. Her husband, Phil Haines, described the event on Wednesday as a horrendous incident. He noted that while her physical injuries were severe, her heart and mind remained in good shape.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the attack. Police allege he drove his Toyota LandCruiser into the legislator. He has appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors indicated that further charges, potentially including attempted murder, may be added.

Nugent's legal representative cited mental health concerns for the accused without providing specific details. Victoria Police, working with the Australian Federal Police, continue to investigate the case. They have not yet established a motive but are examining whether drug use or medication played a role. Nugent's family stated they were long-time friends of Haines.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the attack soon after it occurred. Speaking to ABC television, he said Australia had seen a rise in temperature and too much shouting rather than discourse. Haines entered parliament in 2019 following a career as a nurse and midwife. She is recognized for her support of stronger climate action policies.
