23 percent. That is the probability assigned to Lamine Yamal by Avisia, a French data analysis firm, for winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or. The award ceremony takes place within 24 hours at the London Palladium. The race has narrowed to three finalists: Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.

The path to this moment involves a split in expert prediction. Avisia models place Yamal first, followed by Kane at 21 percent and Mbappe at 19 percent. Rodri, the 2024 winner, also sits at 19 percent, while Lionel Messi holds an 18 percent chance of a record-extending ninth title. The firm notes it correctly predicted the top five for the previous year's award, which went to Ousmane Dembele. Bookmakers, however, view the field differently. They list Kane as the outright favorite with approximately 70 percent of the implied probability.

Support for the candidates is divided among current and former players. Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, favors Messi. Simeone stated that after the World Cup, Messi played at his age without doubt. Marco Materazzi agreed, describing the 38-year-old as being in a different league. Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, backed Kane, citing the England captain's work ethic. Anthony Gordon supported his Barcelona teammate Yamal, calling him on a whole other level. Aurelien Tchouameni described Mbappe's season as incredible.

The statistical cases for the top contenders are distinct. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and the Champions League's leading marksman with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set a record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Lionel Messi scored 82 in 2011-12. Yamal's season was hampered by injury, resulting in lower personal statistics, but he secured the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona.

Silverware complicates the narrative for Mbappe and Kane. Mbappe won no major titles with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but led England to a third-place finish at the World Cup. Yamal holds the advantage in major trophies. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not win the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in the year of their award.

A victory for Yamal would establish a new age record. He is 19 years old. The current record belongs to Ronaldo of Brazil, who was 21 when he won the award in 1997. The London Palladium will host the announcement later today. The three finalists will be present for the ceremony.
