Mbappe’s 22 World Cup Goals Clash with a Trophyless Season
The Real Madrid star argues his individual records outweigh a season without silverware as he faces a historic hurdle at Monday’s ceremony.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as an outsider, relying on a new individual record to overcome a season devoid of team trophies.
The 2025-26 campaign ended without silverware for the French forward at either club or international level. He finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France also failed to win the World Cup, placing fourth after losses to Spain and England. Despite these results, Mbappe points to statistical dominance as his primary qualification for the award, which carries no cash prize but elevates a player’s status.
His strongest statistical case stems from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He reached 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month.
His club performance supports this narrative. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward scored 25 goals to finish as La Liga’s top scorer. He also led the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," he stated. When asked who he would vote for, he replied simply, "Myself."
The lack of collective success remains the central weakness of his bid. Real Madrid endured a turbulent season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, extending their run without a major trophy to a second straight year. His main rivals secured more hardware. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe appears undeterred by the disparity in silverware. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI radio. He argued that individual performance and memorable moments are the defining factors for such an award. His current manager, Jose Mourinho, publicly supported the bid. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
Historical data suggests the odds are against him. Every Ballon d'Or winner in the past decade lifted at least one major trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won two years ago after claiming Euro 2024 and the Premier League.
One precedent exists for a trophyless winner. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid won the award in 2013 without a major title. That season, Ronaldo scored 66 goals, Portugal lost in the 2012 World Cup playoffs, and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Ronaldo’s win ended Lionel Messi’s four-year streak. Mbappe has received nine nominations previously and placed third in 2023. The ceremony takes place on Monday.
