Royal Family Reactions: Meghan Markle Addresses Father's Abuse Allegations

The Duchess of Sussex explains her silence on prior police correspondence while her father faces international investigation over digital evidence found in the Philippines.

The relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her father, Thomas Markle Sr, has faced its most significant scrutiny yet after claims emerged that he possessed hundreds, if not thousands, of child sexual abuse images. Meghan Markle described herself as deeply distressed by the allegations, which have now drawn the attention of both Philippine and US law enforcement agencies. The controversy highlights a complex web of family estrangement, international jurisdiction, and the delicate balance between private grief and public accountability for members of the global royal family.

The dispute was triggered by reports from The Sun newspaper, which stated that Markle’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, discovered a collection of images on computers and mobile phones. These devices were reportedly stored in four large boxes at the Markle family’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines. Markle Sr, who lived in the country until returning to the United States in May following a stroke, has denied the accusations. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he characterized the claims as sick lies, expressing shock and hurt over the timing of the revelations.

In a statement issued through a spokesperson, Meghan revealed that the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, known as Rasp, shared a letter with her in 2018. This correspondence contained disturbing allegations against her father, and she was assured at the time that an investigation was underway. She explained that her decision to limit contact with her father and prevent him from meeting her children was driven by a singular purpose: protecting them. She noted that she trusted authorities to safeguard other families and hopes justice will be fully served.

Sources indicate that Meghan remained silent about the 2018 correspondence because speaking publicly could have jeopardized potential investigations or exposed her to legal action. The Rasp unit is understood to have passed the letter to her shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry. While the Metropolitan Police has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not doing so currently, the force has launched internal inquiries to confirm whether Rasp officers were involved in transmitting the document.

Law enforcement in the Philippines has confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. Nicholas Ty, an undersecretary at the justice department, stated that a specialized taskforce in Cebu is handling the case. Interior secretary Jonvic Remulla added that national police have secured Markle Sr’s computer for a full digital forensic examination. He expected the results to be available within one week. Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it will support Philippine authorities and investigate any related federal violations of US law.

Markle Sr, speaking from a rehabilitation center in Florida where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after a leg amputation, insisted the computers were not in his possession since he left Rosarito, Mexico, in January 2025. He said he moved to the Philippines for a fresh start. His half-sister, Samantha Markle, has defended the elder Markle, accusing her brother of fabricating lies to generate income. She noted that the allegations surfaced days after their father cut off his brother’s funds and emphasized that the computers had been out of his possession for two years, leaving room for tampering.

The situation underscores the ongoing tension within the Sussex family dynamics. Markle Sr has been estranged from the Duchess since he missed her wedding to Prince Harry on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, who is seven, and Princess Lilibet, who is five. As the forensic results are awaited, the case continues to unfold across international borders, with both the US and Philippines playing key roles in determining the truth.
