Six days passed between the initial airspace breach and the physical recovery of the drone wreckage in Latvia. The National Armed Forces announced on Saturday, October 24, that debris was found in the Alūksne district. The military stated the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18.

The incident initially surfaced after witnesses reported a noise resembling an explosion. The National Armed Forces and the State Police began searching for a crash site. That operation stopped after two days because authorities lacked sufficient data to determine what had occurred. A new investigation is now active to examine the circumstances of the event. An internal review has also started to assess how the incident unfolded.

Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and no further threats have been identified. The discovery follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania on October 18. Wreckage from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuania reported the drone entered its airspace from Poland.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the drone contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event. The Latvian military did not provide details on the drone's origin or payload in its announcement.
